Special Event Notice!
Civil War Medicine - A Living History Portrayal
Andy Rowden, Director of the Tyson Library at Versailles,
will be the speaker for the Big Oaks Conservation Society on
Monday, February 6, at the Madison-Jefferson County Public Library.
The program is a first person living portrayal of a surgeon
during the American Civil War.
Rowden will portray Dr. James S. Prescott, a U.S.
Army field hospital surgeon, who brings the times of the Civil
War to life through his personal experiences. Dr. Prescott portrays
what the war was like, the reasons for which it was fought, and
the suffering that occurred due to battlefield wounds and disease.
Dr. Prescott tells stories that are generally not known about
some of the most famous people in history. Witness a demonstration
of surgery and hear the tales of how medicine advanced during
the conflict- as it was considered the last of the "Middle
Ages of medicine". It is this story and others that Dr.
Prescott tells in "Civil War Medicine".
Since 1984 Rowden has been actively conducting Living
History speaking engagements for school groups and civic organizations.
Starting at first from the simple "haversack talk"
He has developed a repertoire for a variety of living history
program including such venues as Here's Our War- the story of
the common American soldier during World War II based on the
writings of Ernie Pyle, Hardtack and Coffee - the experiences
of a Civil War soldier, Soldier's Joy- the wit and wisdom of
a Regular Army soldier during the Spanish-American War, The
Three R's - the tale of a rural school master during the 1850's
and the upcoming Civil War Medicine.
